Why BIOS optimization is something for you to consider

Do you know that feeling when you get some new gear for yourself? I have had this with my latest Hi-Fi-system at home. I was reading reviews, tests and more and finally decided. I unpacked the head unit and loudspeaker, plugged everything together and popped in my favorite CD (actually, back then it was Avicii). I turned up the volume and all I got was pure disappointment.

I realized that all the recommendations and critiques on the Hi-Fi system I had read couldn’t be wrong, so maybe there was something else I needed to take care of.

Does that sound familiar when you think of the latest purchase and deployment of your servers? You got the perfect gear, the reviews were fantastic and the data sheet suggests something very different from what you see?

Back to the music. The problem was nothing to do with me. The problem was also not with the Hi-Fi system either. However, the sound I heard was just not, what I expected. The simple reason was that I was just neglecting the fact that the default factory settings were designed for classical music, reggae, pop and rock at the same time.

That is the exact same thing with servers today

Every PRIMERGY BIOS is developed uniquely.  Ex-factory, the settings are configured by default with an optimal ratio of performance and energy efficiency suitable for the most common application scenarios. The factory settings on my Hi-Fi system made the deep bass from my favorite Avicii song too flat, the guitar riffs were just not clear enough… Simply put, it really groaned, scratched, and rattled. In the final analysis, the factory settings were not suitable for my listening pleasure.

When you think back to the server now, you might realize that special applications also require special treatments regarding throughput, latency, and energy efficiency. How do you now generate the pleasure, both for your personal listening habits and the server system that is ought to perform to your requirements?

In both cases, some kind of “adjustment and optimization paper” is the solution. For my Hi-Fi system, it was quite easy: I consulted the instruction manual (as a practical person, I usually don’t use such things) and read a bit. Not only was there obviously an option to adjust treble, middle and bass, but this music box  also offered special setting for certain genres. Problem solved.

For server systems this is not necessarily different, however, the options, reasons and metrics differ simply due to the complexity compared to a music system. Apart from the applications, operating system and potential middle- and firmware, the BIOS of a server or computer system is an important thing to consider more closely when you feel a rising sense of disappointment right after first deployment and installation.
