Fujitsu Forum 2017 Primergy Exhibition

Over the past couple of years, I have had a unique opportunity to interact with FUJITSU’s world-wide customers and figure out their specific business needs and how they are achieving them. I am of course, referring to the one and only FUJITSU Forum, where thousands of customers & technology professionals interact and co-create successful IT-driven business outcomes. It is awe-inspiring and also highly educational to hear the success stories describing how our customers use FUJITSU’s products to address their daily business requirements in an innovative way.

Our customers have embraced Digital Transformation. They understand that IT investments can deliver tangible business benefits. They leverage a wide array of powerful applications that need to work in synch with various operating systems and hypervisors. And if there is one truth, it is this: workload diversity will continue to scale upward, as more and more business-specific applications emerge.

A challenging shopping list – let’s visit the Forum!

FUJITSU’s customers deal with workload diversity every day, and need us to provide solutions. Let’s take a look at the challenges facing an IT procurement team in a global manufacturing organization.

They attended the Forum with a huge shopping list of what they wanted. Although workloads varied considerably, the mandate from their IT administration team was also very clear. They sought to minimize server hardware from different vendors, standardize hardware and also wanted a system with state-of-the-art server management capabilities.

Company management policies had a mandate to take as many common, future ready systems as possible from a proven partner with a consistent track record of timely service and support.

Diverse workloads – and the search for an all-in-one answer

The team’s workload list reflects the typical environment likely to be found at any large, distributed global manufacturer.

Engineering development needed a server capable of handling a computing and memory-heavy application. They needed several dual processor machines with high bin processors with high core counts, and with over 500 GB of memory. Some servers would host separate instances of the application, others would provide backup, while others would be test beds. A mix of tower servers and rack servers was required.

The factory operations team required a virtualized configuration capable of handling multiple VMs, with enough memory to provision at least 50 GB per VM, each of which would run an instance of their enterprise supply chain management software. Furthermore, they wanted heavy native storage to store the processed data, at least 24 drives with high speed storage and sufficient data transfer capabilities. They needed data backups and hence high I/O throughput was also preferable. Space in the factory was at a premium, so rack servers was the preferred option.

The sales team ran the brick and mortar stores the organization used to sell their products. Their focus was on servers that could run their standard business applications and also collaboration/IT infrastructure workloads. Cost effectiveness was the key criterion, while they needed around 128GB of memory per machine for some of their bigger workloads, reasonably priced storage and networking options. Since the servers would be located in publically accessible offices, they required tower servers & with physical security features to prevent unauthorized access.

The IT procurement team was now facing a classic example of varied requirements which would usually be near impossible to meet with a single design.

In short, they were looking for a server with:

  • Compute and memory sufficiently capable of handling demanding applications and provisioning multiple VMs
  • Significant storage capacity + flexibility to add advanced I/O for high bandwidth data transfer
  • Available cost effective configurations
  • Rack and tower form factors
  • Advanced server management features

FUJITSU did indeed have an answer ready for them: the all-new FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY TX2550 M4. The server is also designed for huge expandability with up to 32 storage drives, advanced RAID and a range of high-throughput networking cards, including DynamicLOM options, making it the perfect choice for storage centric requirements. Up to 8 expansion slots are available for future growth.

From a reliability standpoint, the server also delivers world-class reliability and energy efficiency up to 96% efficient, dual power supplies. Operation in higher ambient temperatures is ensured by the Cool-safe® Advanced Thermal Design, avoiding the need for spending on special cooling.

It is available in both rack and tower versions from the factory itself. No last-minute assembly hassles.

Flexible configurations tailored to your budget – the TX2550 M4 is available in no less than 10 different configurations tailored for different storage configurations across both rack and tower form factors. The range includes budget conscious basic configurations all the way up to maximum storage capability (32 drives)
